Scalping on metatrader is one of those things that sounds dead simple in theory but absolutely destroys most people who try it without a proper plan. The idea is straightforward enough.. get in get out take a few pips and do it over and over again until youve built up a decent days work. The reality is that without the right setup on MT4 youre fighting with one hand tied behind your back.
Setting Up MT4 for Scalping
First things first you need your charts clean and your execution fast. That means stripping out every indicator you dont actively use for entries because screen clutter kills decision speed and when youre scalping you dont have time to think about 14 different signals. Two or three indicators max.. an EMA for trend direction RSI or stochastic for momentum and maybe VWAP if your broker supports it. Beyond that youre overcomplicating things.
The timeframe debate is one that never ends but most successful scalpers are working off the 1 minute or 5 minute charts with a 15 minute or 1 hour chart open alongside for context. You want to be trading in the direction of the higher timeframe trend and taking quick entries on the lower one. Going against the grain on a scalp is a fast way to blow through your daily loss limit.
One click trading is absolutely essential and if you havent enabled it in MT4 youre already behind. Go to tools options trading and tick the box. It lets you enter and exit positions with a single click instead of going through the order window every time. When youre trying to catch a 5 pip move you cant be messing about with confirmation dialogues.
Spread matters more in scalping than any other style of trading. If youre paying 2 pips spread on EURUSD and targeting 5 pips profit youre already giving up 40 percent of your potential gain before youve even started. ECN accounts with raw spreads and a small commission are basically mandatory for serious scalping.. the retail standard accounts with marked up spreads will eat you alive over time.
The other thing nobody tells you about scalping MT4 is that your VPS matters almost as much as your strategy. If youre running the platform on your home wifi with 50ms latency to your brokers server youre going to experience slippage that turns winning trades into losers. A cheap VPS located near your brokers data centre costs about 20 quid a month and its probably the best investment youll make if youre serious about this.
Session timing is crucial too. Scalping EURUSD during the Asian session is like watching paint dry.. the spreads widen the volume drops and the moves are tiny and choppy. London open is where the action is and the overlap with New York from about 1pm to 4pm GMT is prime time. Thats when you get the volatility and the volume that makes scalping actually viable.
